Thanks to the James Pantyfedwen Foundation, I was able to study a Master’s in European studies at King’s College London. Having studied German for my undergraduate degree, I opted for the German Pathway of this course, which meant I spent the second semester studying at Humboldt University in Berlin. Without a doubt, I would not have been able to afford this unique experience without the help of the James Pantyfedwen Foundation.

My first semester was spent at King’s College studying a variety of modules on different aspects of European politics. ‘Russia and the European Union’ was particularly poignant to study, as this was not long after Russia’s horrifying invasion of Ukraine. I studied Russian for my undergraduate degree and spent time living in Russia, so I have a personal interest in the matter, and it was eye-opening to study the topic at such a pivotal point in contemporary politics in the region.

During my second semester at Humboldt University in Berlin, I was thrilled to be able to further expand my linguistic skills studying some modules through German. While in Germany, I also worked on my dissertation, which I angled to suit my interest in languages. I wrote about the effect of international organisations on minority languages, using the case study of Welsh and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. It was wonderful to be able to focus on my Welsh identity through a European lens.

I now organise events for the Centre for European Reform, a think-tank based in Westminster and with offices in Brussels and Berlin, focusing on European politics. I’m delighted to be able to work in a field directly related to my studies.

I’m endlessly grateful to the James Pantyfedwen Foundation for the opportunity to have studied a field I enjoy so much, and which has led me to a rewarding and exciting career. Diolch o galon.
