Griffith Jones Llanddowror

The Carmarthenshire Antiquities Society applied for a grant to help publish this booklet, a bilingual study of Carmarthenshire's contribution to the growth of Nonconformity in the county and throughout Wales. The focus is on the life and work of Griffith Jones, a man described ‘as the greatest Welshman of the eighteenth century’, and whose circulating Welsh Charity Schools were crucial in the effort to make Wales a literate nation and a means of preserving the Welsh language. References are also made to the work and contribution of Madam Bevan, Peter Williams Thomas Charles, Dafydd Charles and others, and the publication aims to show the non-conformist heritage of the county and to create interest among readers who are new to the history. The booklet is part of the 'Carmarthenshire Enlightenment Project’, which seeks to promote the literary, social and cultural history of the area, and according to Professor D Densil Morgan, this book "is an invaluable contribution to the Project’s work".
