With the aid of a James Pantyfedwen grant I was able to study towards an MRes in Chemistry at Durham University. I focused on investigating pentafluoropyridine, a small molecule with interesting chemical reactivity. The research I undertook was a continuation of a recent publication described by my supervisors. My research reports optimization of a process of preparing acyl fluorides from carboxylic acids mediated by pentafluoropyridine in a one-step approach. I was lucky enough to publish the work from my study in the Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry journal. I have just had confirmation that I have passed my thesis with minor corrections.

Studying at Durham has been a very rewarding experience and the financial contribution from the Foundation was a considerable help as it reduced the debt burden and allowed me to focus solely on my studies. Durham is home to a very well-equipped Chemistry Department and by studying here I have learned a great deal about research chemistry and the techniques that accompany it. This opportunity, supported by the Foundation, has put me in good stead for my future research endeavors.

Following the year at Durham, my interest in organic chemistry has continued to grow and I am now undertaking a PhD at Keele University focusing on modifying cellulosic biodegradable materials.

Thankyou to the James Pantyfedwen Foundation for their financial contribution, covering my tuition fee.
