I am incredibly grateful to the James Pantyfedwen Foundation. Completing my Masters degree over the last year was challenging given the Covid pandemic; however, without the grant, I received, it would have likely been impossible! Having financial support meant I was able to focus completely on my studies, resulting in a distinction for which I am very proud.

My long-term goal is to work as a clinical psychologist in Wales. I completed my Bachelor’s degree over a decade ago, and most of my work experience until now has been unrelated to psychology, which is why I chose to study the MSc in Health & Clinical Psychology at Bangor University. This was certainly the right choice, and I gained so much from the course. Through the various modules I followed, I learned that the field of clinical psychology is far broader than I knew. I was able to learn about how clinical psychology works within the NHS, how to think critically and evaluate the evidence, the different therapeutic models commonly used, as well as more specialised knowledge within clinical neuropsychology and childhood development.

Importantly, I was given the opportunity to conduct my own research, and supported to develop my skills in research methods and statistics. The focus of my research was maths anxiety, which can have a huge impact on an individual’s performance in maths. We tested an intervention which aimed to help those with maths anxiety, whilst also investigating the underlying cognitive effects of maths anxiety. The experience highlighted the importance of research within clinical psychology, and has made me all the more committed to contributing to research which will benefit the wellbeing of those who live in Wales.

After graduating, I was overjoyed to be offered a position working as an assistant psychologist within the NHS. In my role, I work alongside clinical psychologists to support adults with learning disabilities in the community. I rely heavily on the skills and knowledge I gained from my Masters degree every day. Additionally, I have submitted my application for the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, which hopefully brings me one step closer to becoming a qualified clinical psychologist.

Thank you again to the James Pantyfedwen Foundation!
