I’m very grateful to the James Pantyfedwen Foundation for the financial support I received for my MA in Welsh and Celtic Studies at Cardiff University. This scholarship gave me the opportunity to study under the supervision of leading academics in the fields without a financial burden. I was also able to travel between Cardiff, London and Aberystwyth to see special collections in the British Library and the National Library of Wales.

I appreciated the flexible nature of the course in Cardiff. It was expected that the tutor and student worked together on the content and outputs of the various modules, and it was possible to tailor the course according to the student’s specific interests. The flexibility allowed me to concentrate on my special interest, the political and prophetic poetry of the 14th and 15th centuries. Research work was quite a challenge when the libraries had to close for a long period during the spring and summer, and I had to change the title of my thesis at the last minute as I could not have access to key sources. I’m truly grateful to my tutors for the help and support I received during the lockdown, at a time when the Department and University themselves had to face many challenges and difficulties.

I hope to study for a PhD in medieval literature next year, and my MA course has certainly been an important foundation for an academic career in the future. I am grateful and indebted to the Pantyfedwen Foundation for their valuable support.
