The grant I received was crucial for my Masters’ study. Without having to worry about financing the course, I had a very fulfilling year developing my creative writing, experimenting with new styles and being able to venture into the fields of both prose and poetry. In my final portfolio, I included many different types of creative writing, from the first person descriptive prose to commentative writing to strict metre and vers libre poetry. It was a period of experimenting and learning more about the discipline.

It is important to record that I also had the experience of academic research. The course included writing three academic essays responding to the creative writing of other authors and poets. I prepared a research project on the work of T. Gwynn Jones, and also had the opportunity to study the work of modern poets, who are writing today and are influenced by current political events. Before my Masters’ year, I had never imagined studying for a doctorate, but the work of these poets inspired me to continue my research work, and to study for a PhD which will look at the literary response to the 2016 Referendum vote.
