Ffion Roberts

Having received the grant from the James Pantyfedwen Foundation, I was able to study a Masters in Biomedical Science at Cardiff Metropolitan University, specializing in immunohaematology. I have gained many new skills from this course including the ability to work independently in a laboratory and carry out my own research. My project looked into the use of plant-derived flavonoid compounds to reduce inflammation and therefore protect against common inflammatory diseases such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Initial results are promising. I was also able to enhance my scientific writing skills and gained confidence in my ability to give clear and well-organized presentations. I will use these skills in future as I have gained a place to study a PGCE in secondary science where I will qualify as a teacher.
