The Pantyfedwen grant enabled me to follow the ideal academic pathway – a MA degree within the Department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London. This course included elements of contemporary art theory, philosophy, creative and critical writing, and a strong commitment to the developments and discussions within the art and academic worlds today. I received a First Class for my dissertation which looked at new ways of considering Wales as an ontological concept within the context of contemporary debates regarding futurism and the end of history, looking at the recent works of video artists James Richards and Bedwyr Williams and the poet, Gwyneth Lewis.

Since completing the course, I have been fortunate enough to receive many other exciting opportunities. I have been a writer in residence with the International Contemporary Dance Collective during their time at the Chapter, I have published articles on the arts in magazines Barn, O’r Pedwar Gwynt, Y Selar, Golwg and Y Stamp, and worked on a process to develop an original stage project, and sat as a judge on the Iris International Film Festival Competition. My short story ‘Byd Crwn’ was published in a volume called Byd Crwn a Straeon Eraill (Y Lolfa) and the translation of another of my stories, called ‘Y Ffurfiadau’, is to be published in a volume of Welsh Writing on LHDT themes. In 2019 I have received a writing bursary by the British Council, which will include a trip to New York during one of the US arts calendar’s highlights, the Armory Week. And I shall be spending a month at the Venice Biennale supporting the Sean Edwards exhibition representing Wales in Venice 2019.

My priority at the moment is to establish myself as an arts writer in Wales and beyond, but I would like at some point to study for a PhD. With every new opportunity I receive, I realise that my career path could have been very different without the support and generosity of the James Pantyfedwen Foundation.
